October 2015

A busy month of holidays for me this month. First a wedding in country Victoria, which was very
pleasant and I am glad I went. Then a big camping/boating/fishing trip up to the Exmouth Gulf for 7 days.
The fishing was great again and a report on that is below.
A few catches from my October Charters

Adrian Sutton booked a charter in the first week of the school holidays this month and only asked to go a short distance out and catch a fish.
He wanted to get his kids, Kate and Alex onto something. I headed south along the cliffs and fished a couple of points on my GPS.
It did not take 11 year old Alex long to land a morwong
and then followed up with a big coral trout.

Not to be out done Kate brought this 99cm estuary cod aboard, which kept Alex quiet for a while!
Alex rebounded with a small estuary cod
and Kate replied again with a just under size dhuie.
Peter Stuurstraat, up from Perth over the school holidays took his kids, Maggie and Clyde out for a fish on Murchison Fishing Charters.
From the beginning, it all went off with Clyde bagging a good pink snapper.
Not to be out done, Maggie followed up shortly after with a bigger version, that made her day!
After releasing lots of painted sweet-lip, blue-lined emperor and stuff,
Peter got this thumper painted sweet-lip and
Clyde made good with a couple more baldchin groper.
Exmouth Gulf Trip
It took a few false starts and cancellations, but in the end we went. A bit later in the year than I wanted but in
hind sight better fishing and it was not as hot as expected.
Wife Sue came along this time as well as Frank Rystenberg, Wayne Ludewig and John Curnow.

We towed the 7.8m boat and two small dinghies up to Exmouth arriving in the afternoon and got friendly with the
local emus that roam around town, and set off for the big tow across the gulf the following morning.
I took my new Phantom 3 Advanced drone and got some of these pics.

Camp life was pleasant, not too hot with cool nights. We took everything with us, fuel, water, food, firewood
and kept everything else to a minimum.

Fishing was quite good and very dependent on the tides. Bait fishing usually resulted in sharks and shovelnose and small lures
such as shallow diving 120mm Rapalas, Halcos and such did the damage together with poppers, stick baits and the incredibly versatile chrome slices.

Big golden trevally were the catch of the trip, once you found the pattern, place and timing they got caught.
5000 size Stellas, Biomasters on light flick rods with 20-30lb braid was the tackle of choice.
Trolling or casting along the reef edges produced the best results.

There were a lot of species on offer, giant herring, cods, 3 species of small mackerel, barracuda, pike, grinners, tuskfish, yellow-fin bream,
whiting, mangrove jacks, small GTs, queenfish, garfish, bull and black-tipped sharks and my bucket list, milkfish which I was hoping for but did not get.

Sue with one of her golden trevally
and the dinghy we fished out of.

When the tide goes out there are lots of interesting things in the sand, and a long walk to the channel to fish.

At the end of the island was a great sand spit that produced a variety of fish
and our Telstra Tower. We took a pre-paid internet dongle thing and attached it to the top of this rod tube that was able to transmit to our phones and laptops.
Wayne was well pleased with his golden and John had the best trip getting most of the good fish
as well as this nice queen fish that followed a hooked mackerel to the dinghy. John made a short cast while it was still
around and hooked up a couple of metres from the boat. It tore a lot of line from his Biomaster in a
 short space of time.

I took a lot of GoPro footage as well as with my drone and will be making a video;

Bite of the Month
Very big golden trevally for Frank Rystenberg. It was not weighed as it was release but must have been 12-15kgs.
Caught on bait from a lump in the Exmouth Gulf and gave him a lot of curry on heavy gear!
Each month I award Bite of the Month to someone who catches the best fish
from one of my boats.
