March 2015

Full on action packed month this has been. It started with the Kalbarri Sports Fishing Classic with loads of good sized yellow-fin tuna that gave us a fair work-out, and it continued right through the
month with every hirer getting good numbers of big tuna and a few mackerel between then.
It still continues and the dirty water spewing out the river mouth from the cyclone has fired up the mackerel that are patrolling the clean edges of the dirty water.
5.3m boat magic
Dylan Meuller, Matt Saunderson and Jasmine struck a good couple of days in the 5.3m boat.
Matt tells the story

After receiving great discounted prices on our combined Boat and Accommodation Package
we headed up from Perth to Kalbarri for 2 days fishing on the 5.3m boat and 3 nights stay.
The owners of the business were very friendly and inviting as we were shown our boat and filled in the paperwork.

Laurie was very good to discuss fishing spots and strategies and we arranged a time for
him to launch the boat for us the following morning and set off for the day with 3 on board our little
game set up boat with Skipper Matt, Dylan Mueller , and Jasmine.

Conditions were great as we trawled the hot spots in look for some of the pelagic species with regular radio contact with
Laurie for information and how he was getting on in his charter trip. Between our 2 days we had an
awesome time and caught lots of amazing fish , the photos show for themselves ,
we highly recommend the Boat , Accommodation and service and can’t wait to come back and do it all again !

Thanks Laurie we really did have an awesome time and really appreciated how much advice
you had to offer and the fact you were willing to launch the boat for us and pick us up.
We are going away traveling for a while but very keen to return and make the trip more regularly.

Regards , Matt , Dyl, Jaz
When it all comes together!
Hilton Rich-Bowles and family had a great day out on Charter early March

It is not often you get two quadruple hook-ups on big tuna as well as multiple doubles and singles.
It was one of those days and it was non-stop action.
I even had time to make a short video seeing son Ben was aboard skippering and helping out.
Here is the video
Quad tuna hook-up

Son Matt landed tuna and mackerel

Two Boats big group!
The tuna and mackerel run continued with plenty of fish to go round.
Ben Haran and brother Rob Haran hired the 6.5m and 6.1m boat with their mates and had a ball.
Just before the Cyclone and the weather was overcast, steamy and calm.

The fish just kept coming in for them
Gamex here we come! Oops, cyclone!
Matt Retallack and mates booked the 7.8m, booked their accommodation in Exmouth and were set to
Compete in Gamex 2015 in Exmouth.
They arrive in Kalbarri with the looming threat of Cyclone Olwyn bearing down on Exmouth.
The road was closed so they spent a day fishing out of Kalbarri.
The cyclone went right over Exmouth
Off Kalbarri, the birds were working, tuna jumping and the seas calm

It did not take long and they were all hooked up. 14 year old Matt landed his first tuna, but only got
the head back after a shark attack.

Back at the filleting table with Andrew and Matt, It’s not that heavy Matt!
Exmouth roads were opened, but Gamex was cancelled! They went anyway and towed the 7.8m
all the way up in search of marlin.

There were dolphin fish, GT’s and barracuda but best of all there were marlin.
Young Matt fights his first marlin.

Matt with his first marlin. They got three marlin to the boat.
All were released.

There were slow days

and long days but all were good days.
Matt Retallack lost an estimated 200kg black 30m off the back of the boat, Andrew got a dolphin fish and tuna,
Dale a big yellow-fin and 2 barracuda, Phil got his first yellow-fin and dolphin fish.
Simon got his first GT, yellow-fin and blue marlin, while Simon’s son Matt, got his first yellow-fin (head) and first marlin.
Not a bad set of firsts for the group!
